The origins of Aztec dances go back to pre-Hispanic Mexico. They started as ritual dances to worship the gods and to commune with nature. The dancers formed large circles and offerings were placed in the center, where they believed all energy to be concentrated. Aztec dances were also considered to be a ritual cleansing of body and soul and a medium to reach a higher plane of consciousness closer to man's origins and destiny. The size, posture, and expressive gestures of this porcelain creation entailed a highly complex process of elaboration, making it an excellent example of Lladro's technical and decorative virtuosity. Taken overall, the feathers, the knee and ankle cuffs, the skirt, and the breastplate have been worked with minute ornamental detail and with meticulous use of enamels and metallic lusters. The decoration of the feathers called for a wide range of different tones of green and the use of airbrush solutions with newly created colors. Special attention was also paid to the decoration of obsidian, a stone used in weapons and banners, which has been believed since ancient times to possess protective powers and to ward off negativity. The sculpted bust of a jaguar warrior unearthed in Texcoco inspires Zhane in the creation of this sculpture. Ancient Aztecs believed the jaguar to be associated with the god of night, and to become a jaguar one had to capture at least four enemies. Jaguar warriors, or ocelopilli, were used to capture enemies to be sacrificed to the gods. They would wear jaguar fur and claws for they believed the items would make them stronger and braver. They fought with wooden swords studded with obsidian.

Zhane reveals the presence of Chalchiuhtlicue as he works with clay extracted from the state of Oaxaca. Officially authorized to replicate pre-Hispanic museum pieces, the artisan crafts a detailed statuette of this feminine deity, the female companion of Tlaloc, Aztec god of rain. The original is dated between 1325 and 1521 A.D. Chalchiuhtlicue is the goddess of lakes, rivers, fountains, seas and oceans, and thus the protector of sailors and is also known as "She with the Jade Skirt" symbolizing pure and crystalline running water. "Chalchiuhtlicue is usually depicted holding a staff representing lightning, and a bag of copal, where clouds are formed. She is revered as the female principle of life and patron of midwives and newborns," explains the artisan who though he has officially retired, he continues to pursue his life-long passion for pre-Hispanic art.
