Arrived a day earlier than expected. Was easy enough for me a 5'1", 115 pound gal to put together except for one tab in one of the lock handles required my husbands brawn to pound in. Open composters are basically a plastic barrel tipped over with holes drilled into it and a couple of hatches. This composter is no exception. However, it was very reasonably priced and easy to assemble in 5 minutes with no tools required or pieces missing. As it really had minimal assembly instructions, it took me a minute intuit that the smooth edge of the side pieces are to overlap the seamed edge of the adjacent side piece. The composting instructions included were a good refresher. As noted in other reviews, the "anchoring" slots are more to stabilize the bin than to secure it during severe weather. Once it's fairly full it should be rather heavy, but if winds are a problem where you live you'll want to rig something up, likely. After assembly, the bin was light and compact enough to easily move out of the house to the back garden/yard through our rear door and to plop in the corner where there was bare earth. So far, my neighbors in rather particular Old Town Alexandria have not complained, so here's to hoping we're don't turn into the weird worm people on the block.. Tahroma. The add on kit was the perfect size, however it only comes with two end posts, so the horizontal slats that face the “back” when put together hang freely and wobble around. First of all, the 48" x 48" x 31" option is not 172 gals, it's 309 gals. The item's description doesn't change when you select the bigger option. As you can see in the photo, it is large...probably used best with a lot of leaves, grass clippings, and yard waste. It was easy to assemble. It took me all of 15 mins to put all the slats and spacers in. On one rail, I had to use a hammer and blocking board while sliding a slat to get the groove smooth enough to put all the other boards in. None of my spacers broke as reported by others but you do need to be gentle when sliding them in as they are thin at the neck. You can make this composter bin by yourself but you'll need another person to move it so if you can build it where you want it, that's best. It's a good price too. Heavy AF - but in a good way. We were looking for a compost wizard that was self-turning. We were gifted a very nice standing one, but the weight of the compost started breaking it at the seams/openings. Also, you had to turn it with a pitchfork. So, we plunked down for this one. Slightly smaller volume, but so, so worth it. It does not turn easily as it gets full, but, this has a hidden up side. The screw lid is solid, so no animals can get in, but our elderly neighbors (who occasionally can't recognize their house and try to enter ours instead) did. They ruined an entire batch of compost by putting in their meat scraps and other fat waste. So FRUSTRATING! But! Fill this puppy up, and rotate it so the lid is down and nobody but you is going to take the time to roll this monster over and add things to it. So, is it heavy and somewhat of an effort to turn? For an out of shape 40 something - yes. But not so much so that I don't do it every week, and the peace of mind knowing I know exactly what's in my compost is a good feeling.. Annie.
