The San Felipe was one of the most beautiful Spanish ships in the 1600s. Launched in 1690, it had 96 cannons and was the lead ship of the feared Spanish Armada. It was powerful enough to go up against the most formidable ships in the French and British navies. In 1705, the San Felipe and 11 other Spanish ships waged a furious and heroic battle against 35 British ships. After 24 hours of fighting, the San Felipe was captured but was so badly damaged that it could not be salvaged as a prize. It sank with several tons of gold.

I tried building one of these ships from a kit, the HMS Fly. Ten years into it and over $1K in glues, tools and supplies I gave up (worked on it maybe a week a year as I quickly grew frustrated by the difficulty). I'm certainly not anywhere as skilled to assemble one of these ships as whomever built the San Felipe purchased from Wayfair. The ship is very high quality for the price and looks great in the dining room. The only improvement I have is that the Spanish flag is the modern day one adopted in 1981, in my opinion the ship should come with the flag of the period. The ship is amazing and I love looking at it and imagining what it must have looked like in real life. Today a bought a second ship for my office, the Royal Louis, can't wait for it to arrive..
