This is a very heavy, good quality matelesse coverlet. I have had it over a year, washed it many times (two dogs!), and it didn't even shrink. A beautiful piece. Know that the length works IF you don't tuck in the spread under pillows. Width is not sufficient to cover both sides equally to the floor. This could be a function of our king mattress being tall, however. The width is not a problem, however, since only one side of the bed faces the entrance to the bedroom. Color: We got the gold/burgundy. Gold is the operative word, and in certain light, the color is more like a paper bag. In retrospect, we should have chosen the off-white or the brown. To get more variation in the color and to see a little of the burgundy, I flipped the spread on upside down. Now, I can see more variation in the color and a LITTLE of the burgundy. I did a "remote control" design consultation on the phone for my elderly mother who lives in another State. She had painted her walls a pale green, but had white bedding. She complained that it looked like something was missing. I knew that the real issue was that there was not enough contrast, so I asked her to trust me with the color. She lives in another State, and I know what her taste is. In lieu of painting the walls again, I decided to get a darker green for contrast. It worked. I knew it would. King Coverlet

Hugh is a classic matelassé constructed of mercerized cotton for a sleek appearance and hand feel. The all-over stippling design provides subtle interest, and the coverlet is finished with scalloped edge rounded front corners. Matelasse (mat-la-SAY) is a weaving or stitching technique yielding a pattern that appears quilted or padded. Matelass may be achieved by hand, on a jacquard loom, or a quilting machine. It is meant to mimic the style of hand-stitched quilts made in Marseilles, France. It is a heavy, thick textile that appears to be padded, but actually has no padding within the fabric. Our Hugh Matelasse has a soft, pebble-like texture.
