I have never reviewed an item online before but figured this item merited some of my time. I've wanted a pool table for quite some time and this particular table caught my attention when I saw it on Wayfair's President's day sale. My purchase criteria were simple: I wanted a quality 8-ft table (solid wood + slate) at a reasonable price, and my wife wanted a table with a contemporary look that would not be too "heavy" in our basement.
I was reluctant to purchase a pool table online but decided to take the risk since this particular table was on sale and met our criteria.
Overall, I would give the Table itself 5-stars although I have not had a chance to play on it yet. Delivery went well; the crew was extremely polite and brought the boxes inside our home. While assembling the table, I was very impressed with the quality - all solid wood parts that fit together well. Assembly itself was frustrating though which is why I am rating the overall purchase at 4-stars. Here were my challenges and advice if you purchase this table.
• Consider where you want the boxes delivered. We had no problems taking them down a set of stairs to our basement - except for the Slate panels. The panels came in a single box and each panel was at least 150lb and very challenging to manage down a flight of stairs. It required 4 members of my family (me, wife + two teenage kids) to carry them down. It is doable but I definitely recommend you plan this part ahead of time.
• Although I consider myself capable of most home improvement projects, I was a bit hesitant to assemble a pool table and therefore decided to pay for the "expert assembly" at purchase. This add-on is done through Handy. Handy's pre-appointment communications via text and email were thorough so I expected a positive experience with them. I was sadly disappointed. Set for 7am on a Saturday morning, I waited for 3-hrs for the assembly team with an ultimate no-show. I called Handy and while polite, they could not do anything other than reschedule. Frustrated and unable to reschedule at a convenient time, I cancelled the service and now must wait for a check in the mail for reimbursement. I would give Handy 0-stars due to the no-show. I have zero tolerance for a company wasting my time like that.
• At this point I decided to assemble the table myself. Although there were some obvious grammar issues with the directions, I did not have any issues until I needed to install the slate and then felt. Here were the challenges I had with assembly.
o The assembly instructions provided a You Tube link to seal the seam between the slate panels once installed on the table frame. The method I chose was to use Bees Wax and a butane torch. It’s not too difficult but there is a bit of an art to you. Sealant and needed tools do NOT come with the table. I strongly recommend that you watch a video on doing this first as well as purchasing needed materials and tools beforehand. I had to run errands mid-assembly to get the beeswax and butane torch.
o I expected that the table rails would come with Felt installed. They did not. Additionally, the instructions lacked any directions for how to install felt on the rails. The instructions simply skipped this step. I took me several hours but I did figure it out on my own. The solution is that you need to use the rubber linear gasket (which is not listed on the parts list btw) and insert that part into the top rail channel (there is a piece of filler wood which needs to be removed first) along with the felt to keep it in place. Then you can wrap the felt under the railing to be nailed, tacked or stapled down. I strongly recommend watching a You Tube video for this as well as it will save you time.
o There was not enough felt to cover the table and the rails. After felting the table and 3 rails, I was left with only a small piece which would not cover the 4th (long) rail. I had to call Wayfair and request more felt which I am now waiting to be delivered.
To have a useable table. I had to call Wayfair to resolve the Handy no-show, lack of directions to install felt on the rails, and insufficient amount of felt provided. Wayfair customer service was terrific and provided adequate compensation for the frustrations with this purchase. I know this was a long review, I hope it was helpful in some way. The summary:
