Lastra's design was inspired by the circular wooden slabs used for centuries to create the outer mold in cheesemaking throughout Italy. When fashioned together with twine, the hoop was left with a slight overlap to help maintain the shape of the cheese mold. Maestro molder Stefano Roselli incorporates the overlapping detail into the entire design, from its foot to its rim. A dark dusting on the edges of each piece suggests the ash that was used to preserve these cheeses and highlights each unique silhouette.

This is beautiful china! Exactly what I was looking for. A touch quirky, yet sophisticated & even works mixed with my fine china. Love it! 12/13/20 Update--I have had this china 2 years and it chips and scratches easily. It is not durable. Also, it has little bubbles in the finish that frankly are not acceptable. Wayfair connected me with a Vietri representative who replaced some of the worst ones and the replacements had even more bubbles in the finish than the ones they replaced! Magnificent! These plates sparkle and shine like iridescent jewels. At a distance, they appear to be a bit lighter than the manufacturer photo. As you move in closer, they become a brighter shade of turquoise, as shown in my closeup with the orange cup. I wish the manufacturer would start making cups and bowls in this glorious shade of teal!
