I have bought 80W deicers for years. They don't last forever, but they serve very well for a long time - even during the POLAR FREEZE years ago. I currently have 3. During the winter I add 2 gallons to every "birdbath" every day. The animals drink a lot. Heavy duty extension cords serve well with the green tubes which protect the connections.

This thing really does the trick and this 80 watt version is much better than the 50 watt one that pooped out on us after a couple of years. It also seems to lay flatter that the other one did. The only thing that can be a problem is that our cement birdbath has an island in the middle and sometimes it's difficult to place the defroster properly.

I bought this de-icer to replace one that I had for year that was made of metal and started rust. This de-icer is lightweight, easy to clean, doesn’t look like it’s capable of rusting, and fits below the water level of my birdbath. It’s smaller than my previous de-icer, but just as powerful, so that means the birds get to enjoy more room in the birdbath! The birds seems to like it, and it is certainly keeping ice out of. Now that I see how well it works, I will be purchasing a second one of these de-icers to go with my other birdbath!

Bought 2 of the Ice Eliminator Birdbath De-Icer 50 watt units in 2012. Just opened the packages and tried to use them in a birdbath Neither one worked. Buyer beware, cuz these things ain't cheap!

So far so good!! Will see in the middle of the winter!!

The product listing for this item states: "Safely maintains open water to -20°F." In my case, the heater failed in a typical sized bird bath after the first 24 hours of below freezing temperatures (i.e., 5 to 10 degrees above zero). In addition, the cord is only 18 inches long which is practically useless for outdoor use. In order for the cord to extend from the outside wall outlet which is about 12 inches off the ground, to the bird bath which stands about three feet high, the birdbath has to be right up against the house. Adding a heavy duty exterior rated extension cord as I did probably contributed to its failure. The power just couldn't flow to the heater.

I was so excited to get K&H's high quality birdbath deicer until I discovered that I wasn't able to fully submerge the "stone." I have a standard-sized cement birdbath and the stone only got water up to about half way with the bath being completely filled to the rim; the instructions indicate that the deicer should be fully-submerged. I will remain hopeful that possibly the design crew can come up with a deicer which has a slimmer profile so it can be completely submerged even in a more shallow birdbath. There's no solution to today's problem and unfortunately, I will have to return it.

I purchased two of these about 5 years ago. Felt I was risking my money but am an avid bird/animal lover and it was worth every penny. I have sense purchaed several more for friends as gifts. It works perfectly and the little birds don't have to peck on frozen ice to no avail - much less the other animals who come at night to get a drink. Thanks for a great product. Jonus
